2026: My Rubber Band Year

By Elicipha Njuguna

We often start a new year with words like “growth,” “hustle,” or “peace.” But as I stepped into 2026, only one image kept coming to mind: the rubber band.

On the surface, a rubber band is simple. But if you look closer, its entire purpose is defined by how it handles pressure. This year, I’m embracing the “Rubber Band” philosophy in three distinct ways.

1. The Power of the Stretch

A rubber band is useless if it stays in its original shape. To hold things together, it has to stretch. Lately, I’ve felt that pull in every corner of my life:

  • In my Spiritual Walk: For about 5 years, my faith was dormant even declining! But in 2025, and by God’s grace, I started stepping out of my comfort zone. And this year, I’m being stretched to go deeper. It’s the tension of unlearning old habits, seeking quieter moments for reflection, and trusting God even when the path ahead looks thin. This spiritual stretch is expanding my capacity to love, pray, serve, read the Bible and exercise audacious faith.
  • In my Academic Pursuits: Growth in the classroom isn’t just about the grades; it’s about the mental stretch. I’m tackling subjects that challenge my logic and deadlines that test my discipline. Like a rubber band being pulled to its limit, my mind is expanding to hold new ideas I never thought I could grasp.
  • In my Career and Mindset: I am leaning into the discomfort of being stretched beyond my current professional boundaries.
  • In my personal Development: I am joining a program that requires me to read at least one book per month and write a synopsis as well as meet and work with totally new people. Indeed, the assignments are stretching me in all dimensions – psychologically, physically, spiritually and socially.

Sometimes, the “stretch” feels like tension or discomfort. But I’m realizing that tension isn’t a sign of breaking; it’s a sign of expansion.

2. Resilience: The Snap Back

The beauty of a rubber band is its elasticity. You can pull it, twist it, and strain it, but its nature is to return to its core.

Life has a way of trying to pull us out of shape. In 2026, my goal isn’t to avoid the pull, but to master the snap back. In the valleys and mountain-tops of academics, spirituality/faith, career and physical health, I want to practice the resilience required to return to my centre: my values, my joy, and my purpose.

3. Tension as Propulsion

Here is the most exciting part: you cannot slingshot something forward without first pulling the rubber band backward.

If you feel like you’ve been pulled back recently—maybe you’ve had to take a step back in life or felt a delay in your progress—consider this: you might just be in the “loading” phase. The further back the band is pulled, the further the object flies when released. I’m viewing every setback this year as the tension needed to launch me into my next big breakthrough.

Final Thoughts

2026 isn’t about being rigid or unbreakable. It’s about being flexible. It’s about knowing that I can be stretched to my limits in my studies, my faith, and my work, and instead of snapping, I can use that energy to fly.

What about you? Are you feeling the stretch or are you ready for the launch?
